- Abstract
This article presents information about a study which focuses on the use of instructional films in the teaching of science in high schools. Three different teaching objectives were analyzed in this study. They are: to effect the understanding of scientific principals that can be seen in everyday life; to teach the elements of scientific method so that they can be used in problem solving; and to develop the scientific attitudes in the students. It was also assumed that films' functions would be classified into three categories, unique, specialized, and contributions to objectives. Two current catalogs of teaching films, "Selected Educational Motion Pictures" from American Council on Education and "The Film Utilization Guide" from the University of Michigan. Thirty-eight titles from the first catalog and twenty-eight titles from the second catalog were rated as excellent.
