Argues that entries for the late fifth and sixth centuries in the 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle' are fundamentally unreliable. Andrew Breeze's proposal of a Celtic etymology for the place-name Netley Marsh in Hampshire, England; Germanic naming patterns; Breeze's belief that more of the major place-names of England date from before the advent of the Anglo-Saxons.
