- Abstract
Introduction: chronic kidney disease (CKD) is prevalent and as kidney function is reduced, it is common for the patient to develop anemia. Aim: to discuss the therapy of patients with anemia secondary to CKD, as well as new advances related to the treatment of these patients. Method: descriptive bibliographic review, data were collected through searches in the PubMed databases, in the years 2019 to 2024. Development: the main cause of anemia in CKD is the inadequate production of endogenous erythropoietin, other factors such as: decreased iron availability for erythropoiesis, increased hepcidin levels, reduced red blood cell half-life or vitamin deficiencies are common. Treatment involves iron replacement, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA), red blood cell transfusion and hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors. Conclusion: studying the pathophysiology, differential diagnoses and therapeutic options is the best way to make the correct diagnosis and treatment of anemia associated with CKD. New treatments are being studied with advantages over current protocols, new drugs are important to expand the therapeutic arsenal.
