- Abstract
Plant exudates are sustainably extracted materials that have several potential applications, due to their composition in complex carbohydrates and other components. In this study, the polysaccharide from the cerrado cashew tree (Anacardium othonianum Rizz. (PEJU)) was tested as a source of carbon for Aspergillus niger, and then the formation of products from the cross-linking of PEJU, using epichlorohydrin and glutaraldehyde. The products obtained from polysaccharide crosslinking were used as a support for trapping A. niger. PEJU was offered as the only carbon source for the cultivation of A. niger for 96 h of cultivation. Varying amounts of the polysaccharide were tested with glutaraldehyde for crosslinking and the yield of this process was compared to that performed with epichlorohydrin. The hydrogels obtained from crosslinking were incubated with spores of A. niger for 96 h. The culture medium, containing PEJU as a carbon source, allowed an increase in the biomass of A. niger, being greater under conditions of agitation. The yield of the hydrogel by glutaraldehyde was 20.4% and by epichlorohydrin, 78.13%. The biomass of A. niger, after cultivation with the reticulated gum, increased by 2.1 g. PEJU showed potential to be applied as a carbon source for the cultivation of fungal cells and in the reticulated form, it can also be applied as a support for the immobilization of A. niger by entrapment.
