- Abstract
The use of cover plants can bring benefits in the cultivation of beet, however, little research has been carried out to date on this topic. The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of cover crops on beet cultivation. The experiment was carried out under field conditions in Alto da Serra - rural area of Chapecó-SC, being the first year with a no-tillage system. Sowing was carried out by haul, with millet seeds (Pennisetum glaucum) and crotalaria (Crotalaria breviflora), in an area with previous correction of the soil pH and preparation of the beds; sowing of cover crops occurred between the months of January and February 2019. The experiment was carried out in a 3 x 2 factorial scheme (cultivars and coverings) with four replications; the cultivars Chata do Egito and Maravilha were used; as soil cover it was used: control (without cover), crotalaria and millet. Crotalaria plants are superior to millet plants in relation to green mass production. There was no interference from millet straw and crotalaria in the production and quality of beet. There is no difference in the performance of the two beet cultivars under straw cover and without cover.
