- Abstract
This article presents a review of the empirical literature on attachment to God. The method used was an integrative review, with a survey at BVS, CINAHL, CAPES Periodicals, PsycARTICLES, SciELO and SocINDEX. After examining the 254 publications found, 62 studies were selected for analysis, categorized into five major themes: "building or validating scales," "life cycles," "mental health," "religious experience," and "spiritual counseling and care" . Parental attachment influences how a person will build a relationship of attachment to God. Attachment to God can be a way to alleviate suffering and to repair internal working models of the person. People with secure attachment to God present a healthy increase in spirituality and adopt behaviors that favor physical and emotional health. People with insecure attachments to God show instability in spirituality and report more distress, and may suffer a decline in mental health. The concepts of a God who cares can be employed to promote greater self-reliance and self-confidence. Considering the importance of religiosity in the Brazilian cultural context, the deepening of the theme would be of great relevance for the fields of Theology, Psychology and Religious Sciences.
