- Title
DEVELOPMENT vs. PRESERVATION.
- Authors
Behnke, John A.
- Abstract
The article focuses on preserving areas along with development in the U.S. Federal and state governments, with strong public backing, have been doing well in acquiring and preserving public lands. These efforts need vigorous and continuing support since new proposals to encroach upon these areas keep arising. The availability to large segments of the population of public natural areas for recreation and other uses is limited because their distribution is random and many of them are remote and relatively inaccessible. On the other hand, there are vast numbers of natural areas scattered across the country and owned by individuals.
