- Authors
HÜTTER, REINHARD
- Abstract
The article explores the decline and subsequent resurgence of the doctrine of original sin in Catholic theology. It discusses the debates and discussions among theologians, including Cardinal Ratzinger, on the topic. The article also delves into the theological perspectives of Thomas Aquinas and his understanding of original sin and its effects on human nature. It addresses the theological question of the fate of unbaptized children who die before the age of reason and presents alternative theories to Augustine's position. The article also examines the compatibility of original sin with evolutionary theory and highlights the importance of maintaining a theological interpretation that aligns with empirical evidence. The text concludes by emphasizing the centrality of Christ in Catholic theology on original sin and the celebration of sin and salvation in the Exultet of the Paschal Vigil Mass.
