- Abstract
This article examines a study that found a vaccine targeting proteins of the flagella of Pseudomonas aeruginosa reduced the risk of initial infection in patients with cystic fibrosis. Life-threatening chronic lung infections caused by P aeruginosa are the leading cause of death in patients with cystic fibrosis. In the clinical trial, 37 of the 189 patients who received four vaccine doses developed the infection while 59 patients in the control group came down with the infection. By delaying the onset of chronic infection, the vaccine may result in longer survival of the patients.
