- Abstract
The article presents an essay in which a medical student considers how her family roots in rural North Carolina can help her become a better doctor. The author feels cut off from her family, living in San Francisco (Calif.) and pursuing and education. They neither approve of her location or understand her desire to become a doctor. They tend to distrust doctors. The author feels that understanding her family and their own struggles, their faith and the difference between the rural South and urban California will help her become a more understanding doctor.
