- Abstract
This article presents information about Haiderism in the East of Austria. The author has written that he vividly remembers being in Vienna at the time of the first European elections in Austria. Of the issues that made for the rise of Haiderism, the first in the eyes of the world media was the only positive thing one can be sure of Joerg Haider, Austrian Extreme Rightist: his moderate profascism, his unmistakable nostalgia for the past that he is reported to have absorbed from otherwise nice relatives who had sympathized with the ascending dictator Adolf Hitler. He apologized later for some of these remarks, but naturally they made the headlines. But all the other labels one can apply to Haider are negative:he is anti-American, anti-European Union, anti globalist, anti-foreigner and anti-alien--always mixing the two notions in a very productive way to serve different audiences--and, most notably, anti-East European. One can claim that many of the voters did not vote for Haider because of his racist-sounding demands, but because of his economic stance and his successful mixture of liberal and illiberal themes.
