- Title
Putting it all together to predict extubation outcome.
- Authors
Epstein, Scott K.
- Abstract
The article cites a research study on mechanical ventilation as well as extubation. The last few decades of research on weaning from mechanical ventilation have established a number of key concepts including the importance of determining readiness for spontaneous breathing trials. More recently increasing attention has turned to improving extubation decision-making. Unnecessarily delayed extubation is associated with increased risk for ventilator-associated pneumonia, increased intensive care units and hospital length of stay, and increased mortality.
