- Abstract
The basis of thinking on education for the elder citizen, as conceived within the U3As in Poland (or in the majority of them), is the idea that it should be holistic and its main aim should be the pleasure of learning and meeting other people in conducive surroundings. One problem is the methodology of educational work and another the integrity of educational influence. We are especially concerned with the need for integrity and for the holistic nature of education, which means that in every area of development both of these elements should be treated with the same degree of importance. For the past few years we can say of the Polish model of the U3A that the concept of holistic education is one of the most important characteristics. Integration is the main aim of learning. Retirement is often connected with the risk of social exclusion, which can lead to despair, acceleration of ageing and untimely, even early death. All forms of inclusion counteract this. The learning process in the U3A has as its aim a form of inclusion, very complex, because it is composed of different elements. The philosophy underlying every kind of occupation or class is social inclusion.
