- Abstract
A collection of essays is presented which explore the significance of the 1970s and 1980s as a turning point in the social, economic, and political history in Europe by scholars including Geoff Eley, Philippe Chassaigne, and Hartmut Kaelble. One focuses on the period of 1967-1974 and considers social unrest marked by student protests, militancy, and labor strikes, marking an end of post-World War II boom. Another consider the impact of the oil embargo on European economic growth, the impact on American monetary policy on international currencies, and the rise of the peace, women's, and environmental movements. Another essay considers the economic crisis of 1973, the emergence of high-tech industries, and the public's crisis of confidence.
