- Abstract
The purposes of this paper are, first, to develop criteria for appraising the appropriateness and adequacy of sample survey data for analyzing the determinants and consequences of internal migration for migrants; and, secondly, to apply them to four national survey data sets for the United States. The nine criteria developed concern the needs to be able to identify migrants adequately over space and time; for an adequate sample of migrants; for data on the household as well as all individuals; for a longitudinal (or rather specialized cross-sectional) approach; for detailed economic and noneconomic information on the period before and after the move; for incorporating community/areal-level data; and for experimenting with selected information on attitudes, tastes, and moving costs. These criteria are then used to appraise the utility for migration analysis of the U.S. Current Population Survey, the Survey of Income and Education, the National Longitudinal Survey, and the Panel Survey on Income Dynamics. Each of these data sets is described, and several proposals offered on how each might be improved for purposes of migration analysis.
