- Abstract
The geological composition of the Lazio area features limestone areas in the south-eastern part of the region. These were extensively exploited for building purposes over a very long period of time. It is precisely this continuity of use - together with the utilised forms, which made extensive use of roughly-hewn stones with minimal dressing - that makes it so difficult to identify chronologies, the work of skilled stonemasons, and cultural areas. The existence of strong commissioning authorities, especially ecclesiastical and monastic, is typical of the local area. These showed an ability to determine a kind of construction according to specific canons that we will attempt to highlight, especially in differentiation between forms and functions of both urban and rural architectural features, with particular reference to the middle and final centuries of the medieval period.
