- Abstract
This study presented pharmacognostic parameters to identify fruits of three wild Vaccinium species from Bulgaria. First time reported microscopic data of Vaccinium vitis-idaea and Vaccinium uliginosum fruits revealed the presence of unicellular, linear covering trichomes, stalked glandular trichomes and anomocytic type of stomata. Berry extracts were analysed for total polyphenols, total anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity. The highest values of total polyphenols and total anthocyanins were obtained from the fruits of Vaccinium myrtillus among the studied species. All samples proved to have antioxidant activity measured by two in vitro assays (CUPRAC and DPPH). According to CUPRAC assay, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity values were more strongly correlated to the total content of phenolic compounds than to anthocyanin content.
