- Authors

- Abstract
Music therapists commonly use percussion in their work. Instrumental skills are often related to a clinician's rhythmic acuity or, more specifically, the ability to demonstrate consistent timing, coordination, endurance, and phrasing. There appears to be scant literature in music therapy that discusses rhythmic development, suggesting the need for more specific resources. This article introduces the Rhythmic Acuity Measurement Scale (RAMS), a developmental approach to 8 categories of skill that can help develop a strong rhythmic foundation as related to percussion. The authors provide suggestions for self-testing and development related to each category. A glossary of terms helps to clarify meanings of words related to RAMS and this article. The authors also discuss implications for music therapy pedagogy, clinical training, clinical practice, and future research.
