- Abstract
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the management of the public health. It usually presents like an atypical pneumonia, mostly with respiratory symptoms that vary from mild to severe. Fibrosis is one of the complications that is developed post-COVID-19 pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It is determined by the increased quantity of the extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules (collagen, laminin, fibronectin), modified pulmonary fibroblasts and the damage of alveolar epithelial cells, affecting the structure of the lungs through different mechanisms. The main condition identified in infected patients is diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), that can be acute or organized, due to its evolution stage. HR-CT is the best investigation to evaluate the severity of fibrosis. There is no targeted treatment for post-COVID-19 lung fibrosis, but further research is needed in order to prevent it.
