- Abstract
An application of four Pragmatic Pedagogical Principles to an introductory physics course is presented. This course is intended to freshmen majoring in engineering. In the first part, we describe the Pedagogical Pragmatic Principles (or just the Principles) and the theoretical frame supporting them. The research methodology is then described as consisting of a quasi-experimental model. On the other hand, the operational criteria by which the Principles are set into work make knowledge accessible, thinking visible and learning be continuous and shared if they are fully complied. Evaluation of enforcement of the criteria is made through evaluation of students' activities such as designing and performing an experiment or smart usage of web sites and/or blogs. Students' performance is reported in terms of Hake's factor using results of periodical tests and a continuous evaluation system. We finally present results by which control and experimental groups are compared. Control groups received traditional instruction while experimental groups received instruction based on the Principles. We found that experimental groups showed better academic performance in understanding contents and in better grades. On the contrary, we observed that control groups were getting lower grades at every periodical evaluation along the semester. These results suggest that -in the case of this particular introductory course- the application of the Principles and corresponding operational criteria enhance and foster learning.
