- Abstract
This special issue contains a selection of extended papers, originally presented at the 4th Spanish Conference on Information Retrieval. The selected articles fairly represent the main topics covered during the conference, but at the same time are representative of the current research trends where the Information Access community is working on: Information retrieval (IR) models, performance, scalability, architectures and efficiency; data structures on IR; Web IR; IR Quality Evaluation; User aspects: interaction, user studies and interfaces; Filtering and recommendation systems; Structured retrieval (XML, etc.); Semantic search; Digital libraries; IR in social networks; Opinion mining; Multimedia retrieval; Text mining (classification and clustering); Natural Language Processing in IR and Passage Retrieval and Question Answering. The list of papers included in this special issue is the following: Author profiling is studied in the paper entitled Competitive author profiling using compression-based strategies, authored by Francisco Claude et al. In this paper they address the problem by using several compression-inspired strategies that generate different models without analysing or extracting specific features from the textual content, making them style-oblivious approaches. They show that they can be competitive in terms of accuracy, giving the best predictions for some domains, and they are efficient in time performance.
