- Abstract
In the light of the Fourth Centenary of Don Quijote, this piece examines the articles on Cervantes published in the prestigious cultural review La España Moderna, including those written by famous cervantistas and Miguel de Unamuno.1 It explores the contributors' responses to the work of Cervantes, noting how they relate to perceptions of Spain at the time, outlining their concern with Spaniards' ignorance of Cervantes and their response to the Tercentenary celebrations. It also investigates how these contributions relate to La España Moderna's dynamic internal life, its unity and mission, as the general editor and the contributors joined forces, inciting readers to join them in the formidable enterprise of regenerating Spain, a task to be embraced by all, and reinforced by the form in which it was communicated. Finally, it analyses the relevance of Unamuno's work in the context of the publication and considers the writer's view that La España Moderna was ‘una obra quijotesca’.
