- Abstract
Ayse Demirel Ucan's book, "Improving the Pedagogy of Islamic Religious Education in Secondary Schools: The Role of Critical Religious Education and Variation Theory," addresses the challenges faced by Muslim youth in engaging with traditional teaching methods in Islamic Religious Education (IRE). Ucan proposes a new theoretical and pedagogical framework based on Critical Realism (CR), Critical Religious Education (CRE), and Variation Theory (VT) to revitalize IRE and make it more relevant and meaningful for students. The book provides insights from empirical research conducted in secondary schools in London, England, and offers practical recommendations for curriculum development and teaching practices in IRE. Ucan's study aims to create a deeper understanding of Islam that goes beyond rote memorization and promotes critical engagement and diversity in IRE.
