- Abstract
This article presents information about the office automation (OA) process of the Nuclear Fuel Division (NFD) of Westinghouse Electric Corp. OA is one of the major ways of improving organizational productivity. It is estimated that within five years knowledge workers could save an average of 15% of their time through more automated support. Thus, more effective implementation and management of OA are important issues today. During the implementation process of OA at Westinghouse Electric Corp., the organization's OA needs were defined, vendors were evaluated, a pilot project was designed, and the qualitative and quantitative benefits of the technology were determined. The major conclusion from the pilot project was that OA saved approximately $3,000 per week for calculations. Users indicated that specific problem-oriented instruction by the information center was more useful than general information. There was an average time savings of 13 percent, with a median time savings of 9 percent for activities such as preparing documents, communicating, planning personal work, producing graphics, and making simple calculations. The majority of participants agreed that if OA were extended to the rest of NFD, it would provide significant benefits in the critical areas such as project management, report accuracy and technical leadership image.
