- Abstract
Objective: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the axial skeleton. It causes chronic back pain and progressive ankylosis of the spine. Sexual dysfunction occurs due to the emotional and physical problems caused by the disease. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the relation of erectile dysfunction and sexual functions to patient and disease-related variables in male patients with AS. Material-Method: In our study, 70 male AS patients aged 18-65 years were included in the study. Disease activity was measured using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI). Patients were assessed by visual analog scale-pain (VAS), ankylosing spondylitis quality of life questionnaire (ASQoL) and BECK depression scale. Sexual function was determined using the International Erectile Function Index (IIEF). Routine laboratory tests and treatments were recorded for the patients studied. Results: In patients with AS, negative correlation was found between the scores obtained from 5 fields of IIEF and VAS. There was no significant relationship between AS indexes, laboratory parameters and IIEF. There was no significant difference in sexual dysfunction in the treatment groups. There was no significant relationship between disease activity and IIEF scores, CRP and ESR levels. Smoking and HLA-B27 status were also not associated with sexual dysfunction. Conclusions: Chronic pain can adversely affect the sexual life of AS patients. It should be be kept in mind that pain in AS patients is a significant effect of sexual dysfunction and this problem should not be ignored at the outpatient clinic.
