- Abstract
In this paper we review the main research contributions in the last four decades in the field of psychological well-being. Well-being has three basic components: 1) positive affect; 2) negative affect, and 3) cognitive judgments on satisfaction. We present the basic theoretical models that explain well-being (universal, situational, personality, adaptive and discrepancy theories) and the different methodologies used for its measurement, covering both its affective and cognitive components. We also summarise alternative conceptualizations that take into account the flow and the social aspects related to context. The results of cultural studies and the psychological interventions designed to improve the levels of well being are also reviewed.
