- Abstract
Kinetic arrest (KA) has been observed in the Mn50Ni36Sn9Co5 ferromagnetic shape memory alloy. Magnetic measurements show that the magnetostructural transformation in Mn50Ni36Sn9Co5 is kinetically arrested below 35 K when the cooling field exceeds 10 kOe. Calculation of the fraction of frozen austenite at 10 K indicates that the fraction of arrested austenite can be tuned from 0 to 45% by adjusting the value of the cooling field. In addition, de-arrest occurs in partially arrested austenite as the magnetic field is reduced at low temperature or as the temperature increases at a constant magnetic field.
