- Abstract
The article examines biotic and abiotic transformations of Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE ) with respect to the particular conditions of a contaminated site in Leuna, Germany. Groundwater samples from wells of a contaminated site were used for aerobic and anaerobic degradation experiments. For the aerobic experiments, three bottles were half-filled with 500 mL ground-water from each of the 3 wells, and sodium dihydrogen phosphate was added to each bottle. For abiotic batch experiments, the ion-exchanging material Amberlite® IR-12O+(Purolite) was initially filled into a 100 mL glass column and slowly rinsed with 3 bed-volumes of 1 M HC1 for activation. Later, bidistilled water was passed through it.
