- Abstract
The article reports on the increase in bariatric surgery rates in adolescents in the U.S. in the period 1996-2000. According to data provided by the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, an estimated 771 bariatric procedures were performed in adolescents in 2003. The article reveals that adolescent patients were from 15 to 19 years of age and major complications, generally respiratory, developed in 5.5 percent of patients. It was also found that adults, compared with teenagers, were more likely to be female and to have had more major comorbid conditions.
