- Abstract
In the studies on the projection of values in the public celebrations of the Spanish Habsburg Monarchy, the emphasis has been placed on the monarchical, religious or nobiliary dimensions. It has hardly been analyzed that in these celebrations a national idea, linked to Spain, might also projected. The existence of national identities in the Modern Age is in fact often denied, or its scope intensely minimized. This article focuses on the celebration of the entry in Madrid, on 15th November 1649, of Mariana of Austria, after her betrothal to Philip IV. The iconographic and textual messages which were unfold in this celebration illustrate how public celebrations of the Monarchy might intensely appeal to an idea of the nation. The fact that these celebrations were conceived for a massive spectator public is additionally a powerful indication that national feeling was not restricted to elites. This perception is strengthened by the study of the reports and other texts that were written on those dates about the celebration, which show that the national mentality was shared by its authors, and depict the attending public as also identified with the displayed values.
