- Abstract
The article presents a systematic review on medical tourism in America, highlighting the lack of policies and regulations in this practice. Seventeen studies were identified, revealing that common destinations for medical tourism in America are countries in Latin America. The importance of quality and international accreditation standards in service provision is emphasized, as well as the need to ensure patient safety. An exponential growth in publications on the topic was observed starting from 2007, and the lack of structured policies and models of care for the foreign population in different countries is highlighted.
