- Abstract
The historiography of slavery has promoted significant epistemological and methodological innovations in the last three decades. New approaches have brought to the fore a perspective that has rejected Eurocentric analyzes and avoided reproducing the tendency to reify those who were enslaved throughout the History of Brazil. Atlantic History, Diaspora and Slave Agency are some of the concepts that put the enslaved as historical subject of a world that articulated Europe, America and Africa. Such studies reveal new political, social and cultural dynamics, as well as institutions built on the daily resistance of the enslaved workers. The black brotherhoods, as well as the congada, are some of these Afro-Atlantic institutions that have reproduced in every city that has connected to the Atlantic world. This work addresses the Brotherhood of the Rosary of Itu as well as the existence of its leader in the figure of King of the brotherhood. I seek to reinterpret the history of Itu in the light of this new historiographical approach.
