- Abstract
The article presents several case studies. A 26-year-old woman who had a background of diabetes mellitus was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis, Stroke-like episodes or MELAS syndrome confirmed by analyzing mitochondrial DNA. A 23-year-old woman having a history of hypothyrodism at age 12 was clinically diagnosed of MELAS syndrome through mitochondrial DNA sequencing and muscle biopsy. Details on mitochondria and the causes of MELAS are presented.
