- Abstract
This article comments on the paper The Eclipse of the Democratic System, by Walter Dean Burnham. Where the party system in general and the Democratic party in particular are going is intimately related to broader societal trends. Burnham's forecast for the U.S., the party system and the Democratic party is for stormy weather. As he sees it, in the mid-1960s the country entered into a state of economic, cultural, political and international crisis from which it has not yet emerged. The public has fixed the responsibility for that crisis on the Democrats, who have been the majority party for the past half-century. That blame has not been misplaced, for the Democratic party has degenerated as an intellectual and political force, while the Republicans have become stronger.
