- Abstract
This article describes the isolation of the fungus Verticillium nubilum from potato sprouts affected by the coiled sprout or twisted sprout disorder. The symptoms were reproduced under controlled conditions in the glasshouse following inoculation of surface sterilized potato tubers with a spore suspension of the fungus obtained from a single-spore culture. Ten potato varieties were found to be susceptible to infection with the fungus in pot experiments in the glasshouse, and all exhibited a full range of coiled sprout symptoms. Control in naturally contaminated tubers was obtained by disinfecting them with an organomercurial solution immediately before planting. Coiled sprout was not produced by growing tubers in soil containing herbicide residues, or when tubers were grown in such a way that sprouts had to force a passage through heavily compacted soil or coarse granite chips.
