- Authors
HOSKIN, MICHAEL
- Abstract
The article examines the research of astronomer William Herschel concerning the character of nebulae. More specifically, Herschel sought to determine whether or not all nebulae were only star clusters. The influence of the work of astronomer Edmond Halley on Herschel's research is described. His studies of the Orion Nebula, the Omega Nebula, and a number of Messier objects are explained. Herschel's use of various kinds of reflecting telescopes in his astronomical observations is discussed as well.
