Im April 1939 erhielt das deutsche Heereswaffenamt einen Brief, der auf das militärische Potenzial der unlängst entdeckten Kernspaltung hinwies. Initiator des Briefs war der österreichisch-deutsche Physikochemiker Paul Harteck. Er war auch derjenige, der anschließend die experimentelle Entwicklung einer 'Uranmaschine' am intensivsten voran trieb.
