- Abstract
The book "Rape: From Lucretia to #MeToo" by Mithu Sanyal challenges common assumptions about rape and its relationship to gender. Sanyal argues that feminist discourse on rape inadvertently reinforces stereotypes of women as victims and men as aggressors. She also questions why discussions of sexual violence often focus solely on male perpetrators and female victims, ignoring the experiences of male victims and female aggressors. Sanyal traces the historical and cultural roots of these stereotypes and concludes that rape is a complex and multifaceted issue that requires careful consideration and analysis. The text discusses various perspectives on the relationship between rape, masculinity, and feminism. It challenges the notion that feminists are responsible for obscuring the vulnerability of masculinity and argues that black masculinity has always been vulnerable. The text also critiques the idea that feminist discourse reproduces stereotypes of female vulnerability and argues that masculinity associated with rape culture is inherently aggressive. It examines the impact of Title IX legislation on campus sexual assault cases and questions the assumption that misappropriation is due to adherence to feminist principles. The text concludes by emphasizing the need to address entitlement and subordination in relation to masculinity and the importance of recognizing the severity of harm caused by rape.
