- Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate various influences of media on body image and attitude of Kashmiri educated females towards cosmetic surgery. Methods: A questionnaire-based study was done among educated females involved in different walks of life. A total of800 questionnaires were distributed and 584 were received back with complete information forevaluation. Results: 584 educated females, aged between 18 and 54 years (Mean 34.37 years) participated in the study. 360 females (61.6%) were economically independent. 70.75% agreed that media influences attitude about body image. 80% of females were confident about their abilities although 60% thought they are not good at studies. 75% want to be known by what they are and only 20% think that they cant take criticism about themselves. 53.6% felt that cosmetic surgery is good and an efficient tool to attractiveness, but only 7.2% were ready to actually undergo the procedure. Conclusion: The media in its various forms like newspaper, magazines, internet and especially television play an important role in educating the public especially females on day to day issues which include fashion and body image. The attitude towards cosmetic surgery has been negative across cultures and a stigma is still attached to cosmetic surgery procedures but nevertheless the acceptance of cosmetic surgery is slowly but surely increasing across the globe.
