- Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of consumption of farmed rabbit meat on physical performance, body composition and health in athletes. The participants, athletes of the Spanish fencing team, consumed rabbit meat (n=12) or other meat in the case of the control group (n=6) for 8 days. Before and after the intervention, body composition was assessed by bioimpedance, blood and urine biomarker analysis and performance tests (counter movement jump, long jump, fencing background and isometric grip strength). Body composition analysis showed no significant changes within or between groups. Biomarkers showed that the rabbit consumption group decreased blood glucose (p=0,028) and magnesium (p=0,038), whereas the control group increased urea (p=0,044). No significant differences were observed between the groups over time for any of the biomarkers analysed. In terms of performance, the rabbit consumption group decreased maximum vertical jump and mean vertical jump (p<0,001) and the control group decreased mean long jump (p=0,046). Both groups increased the isometric strength of the dominant hand. Between group analysis showed no differences in performance due to the intervention. The 8-day consumption of free-range rabbit meat did not cause any changes in body composition, health or performance in athletes compared to other meats.
