- Abstract
The article discusses the two types of censorship in Egypt, namely official censorship by the government and societal sponsorship by unofficial censors that include intellectuals, preachers and critics. Ministerial decree number 220 in 1976 laid out the basic censorship rules for all artistic products. Through the Al-Azhar university, the government limits free thinking and expression. Individuals and non-government groups that are hostile to certain artistic or cultural product can censor it.
