- Abstract
The article presents an introduction to the Chinese establishment, the Great World, and examines the relationship between dramatic and non-dramatic performances in such a renowned entertainment center in China. The types of performances at the Great World are described. An account of the establishment by film director Josef Von Sternberg is presented. The significance of the establishment as an emblem of urban recreational culture is discussed. The article also covers the management of the establishment under different Chinese governments from 1917 to 1954.
