- Abstract
The article presents a study that investigates the concept and practice of ekphrasis and impressionism. It highlights the use of Finnish painter, critic and novelist Helena Westermarck's short story "Aftonstämning" to understand the idea of ekphrasis and impressionism. It also examines Westermarck's strategy of adopting modern form of exploring social divisions in the Parisian cityscape through iconic projection, framing and cropping. The study concludes that revealing the tension between content and form in the novelist's interartistic transposition of visual elements, illustrating impressionist project to convey sensory impressions.
