- Abstract
The article describes the principles behind radio frequency identification (RFID) and the details of its application at the Knowledge Centre, Pécs. The characteristics of stickers (tags) used in books and the application of this new technology with the Corvina integrated library system are investigated from the users point. The structural change of the underlying database is demonstrated, as well as the effects of the RFID technique on the main library processes from the inventory of books through loans and return to theft protection. Automating loan and return are described as new possibilities. The use of reader cards equipped with RFID chips is also analysed in detail both for traditional purposes (loan and return), and for new ones, such as registering entries and paying printing and photocopying fees. In addition to a detailed technical description the article shares relevant experience and makes recommendations.
