- Abstract
The article discusses the origin of the phrase "sub rosa." The author states that the earliest citation of the phrase in the "Oxford English Dictionary (OED): is from a 1654 text, while the phrase is used in a 13th-century Latin poem in the same sense. The author suggests that the Latin poem was written by an Englishman and that the phrase refers to Rose windows found in East ends of churches.
