- Abstract
Chronic wounds are defined by tissue discontinuity and no progress in healing over the course of three months. The elderly population and hospitalized patients are the most affected by these types of wounds, since the damage caused can influence the patient's mental health. Objective: this study highlights the importance of nursing care in the treatment of patients with chronic wounds. Method: this is a literature review with the search, selection, and choice of articles in the databases held in the Virtual Health Library (BVS)/Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME), Latin American and Caribbean Database on Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Nursing Database (BDENF), and the Boolean operators "AND" and "OR". Results: the sample was composed of 10 selected articles that showed there is a need for nurses specialized in wounds, lack of materials to perform dressings; aspects that must be analyzed for a good planning and treatment of patients; humanized care of the nursing team along with family support. Discussion: Nursing care contributes to the qualification of patient care, offering assertive, humanized treatment, where prepared professionals practice and continuously follow the adopted protocols. Conclusion: nursing care has the power to avoid possible harm to the patient through humanized, clear, efficient care that follows protocols and promotes continuity of care with trained nurses.
