- Abstract
Mangroves are important wetland ecosystems, providing habitats and a wide range of ecosystem services. Peninsular Malaysia has an estimated of over 100,000 ha of mangrove forest but 90% of it lies on sheltered west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Mangroves of the east coast are less studied compared to the west coast counterparts but they are more threatened. Twenty nine species of true mangroves species are found in Terengganu. This signifies the high diversity of mangroves of the east coast. Comparatively, our study finds that the diversity of mangrove species per unit area was higher on the east coast. We therefore propose for more solid measures to be taken to protect these valuable habitats and all their ecological services for the benefit of all.
