- Title
Understanding grief and loss.
- Authors
Miller, Michael C.
- Abstract
The article focuses on a proposal to remove the exclusion of bereavement from the criteria for a major depressive episode in the next edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V). The authors of the proposal state that bereavement is a major stressor that may cause major depression in some people. However, several researchers have challenged the proposal as they say bereavement is a normal part of life and need not be pathologized.
