- Title
Cutaneous toxicity of liquified methylamine gas.
- Authors

- Abstract
Anhydrous methylamine is a gas stored under pressure as a liquid for use in tanning and organic synthesis. Although freezing injury is possible, methylamine is probably more injurious as a caustic; it is a base stronger than pure ammonia. The compound has not been reported as a contact sensitizer. Methylamine is clearly a powerful primary cutaneous irritant. Unlike its salts, it is relatively nonpolar and readily penetrates the barrier layer. The extent and rapidity of the injury is very fast. It is imperative that those working with methylamine be protected from direct contact with the compound.
