- Abstract
This article explores the influence of St. Ambrose on St. Thomas Aquinas's understanding of the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist. Aquinas cites Ambrose in his writings to support his arguments on the Incarnation, Christ's assumption of human nature, and the mysteries of Christ's life. Ambrose's teachings provide valuable insights and examples that help deepen the understanding of these theological concepts. In relation to the Eucharist, Aquinas frequently cites Ambrose to support the real presence of Christ in the sacrament and emphasizes Ambrose's teachings on the power of God's word in the sacraments. Overall, Ambrose's teachings help Aquinas explain how Christ meets us in the sacraments and highlight the sacraments as a means to encounter the eschatological reality accomplished in Christ.
